Pieter Lodewijk Kuhnen (German, 1812-1877), "Stormy Inlet"

Stormy Inlet, oil on canvas. Signed l.r., pair of wax seals to reverse stretcher. 32" x 39.5" (sight).

A broad work by Kuhnen, and most indicative of his mature work that was related to the Barbizon School, the subject depicts a stormy inlet with a bird's nest atop a rocky outcropping.  Kuhnen was a much hailed painter during his career, and exhibited widely at the Salons both in Paris and in Brussels during the middle of the 19th century.  He received numerous royal commissions and teaching appointments, and was a noted art collector, bequeathing his collection to the Royal Museum of Modern Art in Brussels.

Stetcher lines are slightly visible in the canvas, repaired patch, and overall darkened varnish.

Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000
