RARE MODEL OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY SET FOR AUCTION ON FEBRUARY 22 Example is one of few cast by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi as a sample for the iconic National Monument in New York
CINCINNATI, OH — An extremely rare and recently discovered model of the famous “Statue of Liberty” will go to auction this February at Caza Sikes in Cincinnati.
Recently unearthed after decades from a private collection in Dayton, OH, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s four-foot model for “Liberty Enlightening the World” is one of a handful to resurface and be offered for public sale in the last century. The model, produced by the foundry Avoiron, will hit the block on February 22nd. The model is 4 feet tall and is composed of zinc and copper and bears Bartholdi’s signature as well as the U.S. copyright date.
The Technical Examination Report for Conservation Treatment by the Center for Archaeometry at Washington University confirms that this Avoiron model currently for sale at Caza Sikes does possess all of the distinctive Avoiron model features.
In 1986 Christie’s New York held a special Centennial Exhibition, IMAGES OF LIBERTY, Models and Reductions of the Statue of Liberty 1867-1917, and published an accompanying catalogue with the same title. In this catalogue is a list of contemporaneously known examples of Avoiron Liberty casts, including the current example being offered for sale, which is documented as residing in a Private Collection/Ohio.
Caza Sikes February Fine Art Auction will also feature important historical North and South American sculptures and paintings. The auction will be held on February 22nd at 1 PM EST., and will feature the aforementioned rediscovered casting of The Statue of Liberty by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (French, 1834-1904) estimated conservatively at $20,000- 40,000, and an exceptional painting by Mexican artist Ricardo Martinez de Hoyes (1918-2009), titled “Cargadores de Cal“ (The Lime Porters) and estimated at $80,000-120,000. The painting is listed and registered by The Foundation. Martinez works can be found in numerous public and private collections throughout the world.
